The History
of the Red Rag
Prior to the summer of 1971,
the drinking age in the Province of Ontario was 21 years.
Across the river in the state of New York, the drinking age was 18. Enough
said!
This drove all thirsty adolescents to make the
journey across the Peace Bridge to the land of the free flowing liquid
grain.
The appropriate age was easier to pretend in New York State, than in Ontario. Of course the barley was not as
good. Enough said!
Then during the summer of 1971, the polictical elite
decided to pronounce that all who survived till the age of 18 were now
adults and opened the beer halls to one and all. This was an
attempt to stem the migration of thousands of young people across the
river into the hands of the Americans. Nothing else could stop
it? Enough said!
It was at this time that the our founding fathers
of the Red Rag began a review of all the local establishments.
(It did seem strange frequenting these places and also being of legal
age.) They were looking for a place they could call home.
But none would fulfill the requirements of these two. Afterall,
who wants to drink alongside their parents, in a hotel that plays polka
music. Enough said!
Thus, our two young men decided to create their
own den of iniquity and fun. A place where only the young and
thirsty could come together in harmony and make sacrifices of the
stubby brown bottle. Enough said!
The Red Rag was built and furnished with only the
finest beer kegs and liquor. A place of non-discrimination and
long hours. Enough said!
The Rag would come to be home for those with a special
thirst.

In November 2003 a milestone was achieved
by
two (now) senior members of the Red Rag.
Doug Jarvie and Dale Sider reached
the half century mark.
They celebrated their 50th birthdays together.
A
party was held in their honour. Well at least a party was
held!

Thoughts On Aging
Maybe it's true that life begins at fifty. But everything
else starts to wear out, fall out, or spread out.
There are three signs of old age. The first is your loss of
memory. I forget the other two.
You're getting old when you don't care where your spouse
goes, just as long as you don't have to go along.
Middle age is when work is a lot less fun and fun is a lot
more work.
Statistics
show that at the age of seventy, there are five women to every man.
Isn't that a bad time for a guy to get those odds?
You know you're getting on in years when the girls at the
office start confiding in you.
Middle age is when it takes longer to rest than to get
tired.
By the time a man is wise enough to watch his step, he's
too old to go anywhere.
Middle age is when you have stopped growing at both ends,
and have begun to grow in the middle.
A man has reached middle age when he is cautioned to slow
down by his doctor instead of by the police.
You know you're into middle age when you realize that
caution is the only thing you care to exercise.
The aging process could be slowed down if it had to work
its way through Congress.
You're getting old when you're sitting in a rocker and you
can't get it started.
You're getting old when you wake up with that morning-after
feeling, and you didn't do anything the night before.
The cardiologist's diet: if it tastes good, spit it out.
Doctor to patient: I have good news and bad news: the good
news is that you are not a hypochondriac.
It's hard to be nostalgic when you can't remember anything.
You know you're getting old when you stop buying green
bananas.
Last Will and Testament: Being of sound mind, I spent all
my money.
When
you lean over to pick something up off the floor, you ask yourself if
there is anything else you need to do while you are down there.
You find yourself in the middle of the stairway, and you can't
remember if you were downstairs going up or upstairs going down.

After many
years of fundraising the guys are proud to present some new upgrades to
the Red Rag. Yes,
indoor plumbing is now available. We understand the concerns of
some members, but in keeping with the tradition of the Rag the
men will be allowed to kill trees according to their individual ability
(in other words, how well they can aim). Just remember to
stay out of Ma Sider's flower garden. And if any ladies are
feeling nostalgic, there are designated areas to squat. Of course
this new site has not been tested under winter conditions, but does
come with rustic seat designs and a holder for all the latest
catalogues. If there are particular preferences for reading
material please contact one of our committee members to see if our
subscriptions are up todate. Reservations will not be honoured,
but service will continue on a first come, first served basis.
Thank you,
The Management

Rolling Stones - Sister Morphine Lyrics
Here I lie in my hospital bed Tell me, Sister Morphine, when are you coming round again? Oh, I don't think I can wait that long Oh you see that I'm not that strong
The scream of the ambulance is sounding in my ears Tell me, Sister Morphine, how long have I been lying here? What am I doing in this place? Why does the doctor have no face?
Oh, I can't crawl across the floor Ah, Can't you see, Sister Morphine, I'm trying to score.
Well it just goes to show things are not what they seem Please, Sister Morphine, turn my nightmares into dreams. Oh can't you see I'm fading fast? And that this shot will be my last.
Sweet cousin cocaine, lay your cool cool hands on my head Ah come on, Sister Morphine, you better make up my bed 'Cause you know and I know in the morning I'll be dead You can sit around and you can watch all the clean white sheets stained red.

1971
The
worst prison riot in U. S. history takes place in Western NY.
On September 9th, inmates at Attica Correctional
Facility capture a section of the prison setting the stage for a
four-day stalemate. On September 13th, under orders from Governor
Nelson Rockefeller, the National Guard recapture the prison in a hail
of gunfire. When the shooting stops, 43 persons - inmates and hostages
alike - are dead.
